We finally reached the surface! After defeating Hosilla we went up a level thinking we were done with the evil denizens in this hideout. Unfortunately we still had to defeat some. Luckily for me, they were demons! Finally some revenge against them. With Ragnor we dispatched them quickly, maybe too quickly to be satisfying but I guess this is just the beginning.
After the hideout we continued through a tunnel that reached to the surface. There was almost complete devastation, ruined houses, no more cathedral, walls ruined. The main force of the demons had already left, the damage was done. This worked for us, as we could not hope to defeat the big demons. The city was mostly desolated. Here and there we encountered some cultists, and in the distance we could see some wandering parties which did not approach. They all seemed part of the invading host, and friendlies were to be seen. Had no one survived?
In spite of the destruction and desolation we had a job to do, as was our duty. We were still escorting Anevia, Aravashnial, and the grumpy Horgus. In addition, from the possessions of Hosilla we had discovered a letter discussing three cultists hideouts throughout the city. We intended to pay them a not so friendly visit. Their deeds could not go unpunished.
First we escorted Aravashnial to where he wanted to go. It was some kind of library. The invasion had significantly damaged it, half of it was collapsed, but the main entrance was still standing. From afar it seemed deserted, but as we approached and knocked on the door (we could still be polite after the invasion I guess) we were challenged by some people claiming to be taking refuge from the invasion. They only allowed people disarmed to enter. Obviously I refused, I am always with a weapon at hand. On the other hand Ragnor and Threkil complied. It was not smart. They entered and realized the people in charge were not taking refuge from the invasion, they were part of it! These cultists were torturing the still alive librarians. A fight ensured, in which a timely spell by Bundühr froze their leader giving us time to kill without opposition. With the cultists dead, we armed the librarians with some of the spare equipment we were collecting. Aravashnial wanted to stay and protect the library. We had to continue our journey, but we promised to send help when we could. A password was devised to provide safety: “Terendelev Lives”.
Then we visited a cultist hideout which was destroyed during the invasion. No worries there, 1 of 3 covered.
The next stop was Horgus Gwerm mansion. His house was still intact! It was being besieged by some leftover troops that proved no match for us. He thanked us, and gave us our just reward. He would not continue with us, which was a relief…. no more useless complaining.
Anevia Tirabade place was the following destination. We heard nothing, and proceeded to open carefully the doors. A voice welcomed us, to a fight! Vagorg was waiting, a half-orc sorcerer with a grudge against Anevia’s wife Irabeth. In addition several thugs surprised from and attack from behind. It was a good fight: Vagorg managed to burn some of us, Bunduhr tried to hold him with a spell but failed. In the end, sword and mace were the weapons of his demise. Anevia did not found his wife (obviously), but found a note from her. She urged to go to Defender’s Heart, a place where the resistance was gathering. Now we had a final destination. Anevia continued with us, she still needed us to take to her wife.
The latest stop as of writing this journal was the next cultist hideout. This place was still standing but not without some damage. It was a two story building with a locked door and some holes from which arrows could be fired. This time it was inhabited, but we had a plan. The letter in possession in Hosilla described a password to provide safe entry to the hideout. In addition we had several cultists outfits from the multiple ones we killed. Ragnor and Kilo in garbed in cultist cloth acted as the front of our party, where we posed to be agents of Hosilla. The guards of the hideout believed our ruse and let us in. At the appropriate moment, a codeword from Ragnor prompted us to dispatch the clueless thugs. The welcoming party in the first floor was done, but the second floor and the leader was waiting for us. Again Ragnor and Kilo bluffed their way: we were in charge of cleansing this place of all evidence including the disposable thugs as supposedly some paladins had found out about this place. Incredibly the leader believed them and allowed us to go up without challenge. Talking to the leader Ragnor was able to learn the location of the final hideout which was probably deserted according to the cultists information. Again the rest of us waited for the codeword. When we attacked it was not a fair fight, the surprise was too much for them. Two out of three hideouts were done.
Now we rested before going the final stretch to the last hideout and Defender’s Heart!
We encountered additional trouble along the way. Some cultists torturing a helpless woman, some demon dire rats, and a lesser demon destroying shops. Nothing we couldn’t handle.
